Google has started routing clicks on search result links through a “goto” URL parameter instead of sending people straight to the destination page. Now, Google is inserting an extra hop: the link first passes through something like
google.com/goto?url=[hashed URL]
, and only then redirects you to the actual page.

Google began testing this quietly back in July 2026, and by late August it had reached what looks like near-full rollout. Derek Perkins, who tracks SERP behavior at Nozzle, reported seeing the redirect on nearly 100% of results served through several residential IP providers a sign this isn’t a small test anymore, it’s the new default.

Why Is Google Doing This?

A Google spokesperson confirmed the rollout directly, framing it as part of the company’s long-running practice of deploying technical safeguards as new forms of abuse emerge, with an ongoing focus on protecting its services and users.

From where I sit, this is really about one thing: scraping. Third-party rank trackers, SERP APIs, and a growing wave of AI tools have been pulling data straight out of Google’s results pages for years. Wrapping every link in a redirect makes that meaningfully harder a scraper now has to resolve hundreds of individual redirect links per page instead of just reading URLs directly off the results.

It’s also hard to ignore the timing next to Google’s ongoing lawsuit against SerpApi, a scraping tool Google sued and has so far struggled to fully shut down in court. I’d be surprised if that legal fight wasn’t part of the reasoning behind rolling this out at scale now.

What Does This Mean for SEOs and Marketers?

Here’s what I’m watching closely, and what I’d encourage every marketer to check on their own end:

Third-party tracking tools may show gaps or inconsistencies. If you rely on tools outside Google Search Console to monitor rankings or click behavior, keep an eye on your data over the next few weeks. Some providers may need time to adapt to the new redirect structure.

Google Search Console should be unaffected. Since this change happens at the search-results layer rather than inside Google’s own analytics pipeline, I don’t expect GSC data to be impacted.

Searchers lose URL preview, not destination clarity. People can no longer preview the exact final URL in their browser bar before clicking, though Google still displays the URL beneath each result’s title. For most users, I think this goes completely unnoticed.

Phishing and hijacked pages could be a bigger concern. If a site gets compromised and starts serving malicious content, the extra redirect layer could momentarily obscure that from a cautious user. Google has generally been fast to pull compromised pages from its index, but it’s a scenario worth being aware of.

Will This Affect AI Overviews and AI Search Visibility?

This is the piece I think gets overlooked. If the goal is to slow down scraping by AI companies and third-party tools, it also touches how AI Overviews and other answer engines source and verify links back to your site. I don’t expect this to change ranking factors, but it’s one more sign that the pipeline between “your content” and “how AI systems consume it” is getting a layer more complex which makes clean technical SEO and structured, citable content more important, not less.

My Take

I don’t think this changes anything about how we should be doing SEO day to day. Rankings, content quality, and technical health still matter exactly as much as they did last week. What it does change is how confidently we can trust third-party click and tracking data in the short term, and it’s a reminder that the tools sitting between us and raw Google data are becoming a little less stable as Google tightens control over how its results get consumed.

If your team leans heavily on scraped SERP data or third-party rank trackers, this is a good moment to sanity-check that data against Search Console and flag anything that looks off to your tool provider. I’ll be updating this piece as the rollout evolves and as Google shares more.

Written by

Wajahat Ullah Gondal

Digital Marketing Strategist & Co-Founder @ RANKMETRY

Wajahat Ullah Gondal is a Digital Marketing Strategist and Co-Founder of RANKMETRY.
